Preliminary steps: malware elimination
As just mentioned, many unwanted home page changes are caused by the presence of malware on the computer, more precisely by the presence of so-called browser hijacker, that is, malicious software that modifies the preferences of the browser - home page and search engine - in order to redirect the user to sites that are not recommended or in any case full of advertising banners (through which the creators of malware often earn).
If you use a Windows PC and want to eliminate any browser hijackers present in the system, contact Adwcleaner. If you have never heard of it, Adwcleaner is a free antimalware that does not require tedious installation procedures to be used and manages to eradicate most browser hijackers in a couple of clicks. To download it to your PC, connect to its official website and click on the button Download now which is on the right.
Once the download is complete, launch the executable adwcleaner_xx.exe, click on the buttons Yes e Accept to access the main Adwcleaner window and press the button Analyze to start a PC scan. The operation should only take a few seconds.
When the scan is complete, click the buttons Clear e OK three consecutive times. Your computer will restart and all malware detected by Adwcleaner will be removed.
I use a Mac and not a Windows PC? In this case, it is more difficult for you to have been hit by malware. There are also browser hijackers for macOS, but they are almost all dedicated to Safari. Anyway, if you want to get rid of any qualms about it you can install Malwarebytes Antimalware for Mac (free) and run a full system scan with that.
To download Malwarebytes for Mac, connect to its official website and click on the button Download. Then open the dmg package that contains the program, drag its icon to the folder Applications macOS and launch it.
In the window that opens, click on the buttons apri e Accept, type the password of your user account on macOS and give Submit. To finish, click on the button Scan and wait a few seconds for the system scan to complete.
Change Chrome start page
Once you've gotten rid of any malware on your computer, you can move on to resetting your Chrome home page. How? I'll explain it to you right away.
If you want to learn how to put back the start page of google chrome bringing it to the default state, the first step you need to take is to click on the button (...) located at the top right and select the item Settings give the menu to compare.
On the page that opens, put the check mark next to the item I clicked the Nuova scheda page collocata sotto the dicitura All'avvio and restart the browser. If everything went well, Chrome should show its default home page again.
If you want to change the Google Chrome home page by setting one or more Internet sites as the browser home page instead of the thumbnails of the most frequently visited sites, click on the button (...) located at the top right and back in Settings in Chrome.
At this point, then put the check mark next to the item Open a specific page or set of pages and click on the link Set pages to type the addresses of one or more pages to use as the Chrome start page. To save the changes, click on the button OK.
If you want, you can also change the page Chrome shows when you open a new tab. All you have to do to do this is to put the check mark next to the item Show Home button in the settings menu and click on the link Change placed next to the item New tab page.
In the box that opens, put the check mark next to the item Use the New Tab page to restore the default page (the one with site thumbnails and app icons) or select the item Open this page to type a custom URL. To finish, click on the button OK and the changes will take effect.
If a browser hijacker has changed the Chrome start page, it is likely that it has also installed unwanted extensions within the browser. Such extensions should have been removed from Adwcleaner, but it's always best to take a look!
Then click on the button (...) Chrome, select the item Other tools> Extensions from the menu that appears and identifies the promotional software to be removed in the list of add-ons installed in the browser. To delete unwanted Chrome extensions, then click on the Trash can placed next to their name and that's it.
To also restore the default search engine with which Chrome examines the terms typed in the address bar, click on the button (...) collocato in alto a destra and seleziona la voce Settings give the menu to compare.
On the page that opens, expand the drop-down menu Search, select Google (or another search engine of your preference) from the latter and that's it.
Even though you have removed the malware from your computer and changed your Chrome settings, does the browser keep opening with a different start page than the one you want? Then the malware most likely changed the desktop shortcut you use to start Chrome.
To restore the Chrome shortcut on the Windows desktop, right-click on it and select the item Property from the menu that appears. In the window that opens, select the tab connection, arrives at the end of the field Destination and delete everything you find next chrome.exe ". Then click on the button Apply, try to open Chrome and this time the start page should be the default one.
