For those who were not aware of it, Google Chrome has an internal password manager that allows you to save the access credentials of all the services we use online: e-mail address, streaming video service, streaming music service, photo editing program.

While apparently it is an easy-to-use system, it is actually very sophisticated, as it not only stores credentials for quick access but also keeps them safe from hackers and protects our privacy. After all, if our passwords got into the wrong hands it would be an incalculable damage.

On the other hand, sooner or later all of us have had to switch from one browser to another and find ourselves completely displaced by not being able to trace the passwords. For this reason, Google has made available a system for export passwords saved in Chrome.

With the upgrade to version 65 of Chrome, all passwords saved in Google Chrome can in fact be saved in a CSV file and imported into another password manager.

This allows you to reinstall an operating system, switch browsers, or switch from one computer to a more up-to-date one without the nightmare of losing usernames and passwords.

How to export passwords from Chrome

The registration of credentials on the Chrome password manager is currently visible and exportable in CSV format. It is a format compatible with spreadsheets, so once exported, you can read it with Excel, Libreoffice and Openoffice. So let's see how to do it:

  • Open the browser and click on the icon with the three vertical dots at the top right.
  • A window will open from which you can choose the Settings item.
  • Enter the Settings area, scroll down until you find the word password, or search directly by typing in the password search bar.
  • A new window will open in which you will find a list of all your saved passwords, together with their users. The passwords will be screened, but by clicking on the eye icon you can see them in clear text. To the right of saved passwords you will find a new icon with three vertical dots, clicking on it will open a drop-down menu with the Export saved passwords option.
  • From here you can export your passwords in CSV format, save them on your PC and import them on another browser or have them available for your consultation.

Chrome warns you that accessing this file allows anyone to view your passwords. It is therefore advisable that you keep the file in a safe place, perhaps protecting access by entering an additional password.

How to export favorites from Chrome

In addition to passwords, it is also very useful to be able to switch between browsers save your favorites. Chrome also gives this possibility and you have to follow a procedure very similar to that used with passwords, only in this case the exported file will be in HTML instead of CSV. This time, after clicking on the icon with the three vertical dots, choose Favorites in the drop-down menu. A further drop-down menu Favorites management will open. You will see a screen with a file manager on which there will be all the saved links divided by folders. At the top right you will find the usual icon with the three vertical dots. By clicking on it, a drop-down menu will open with the item Export favorites. It will therefore be sufficient to choose the folder on your PC on which to save the file with the Google Chrome favorites to have them available to you on other browsers.
